The first thing to know is that dolls are evaluated by the type of head. The first dolls were handmade with wood and cloths. The first mass produced were done in paper maché. The first ones had a molded head, a kid body, wood or leather arms and painted eyes. That made Germany the dominant producing country in the 19th century. Not surprising, the first American doll manufacturer was a German immigrant.
